BSA 131 (Digital Filmmaking I) Week 4 : "THEY" Shoot BTS #1

The first set I was involved in was a grad dip project (which counts towards the crewing for a third year film). I was in charge of BTS, something I had an interest in and was happy to have the job of doing. The first thing I was involved in filming was rehearsal with the actors. Arpita, the film's director, wanted me to record their practice sessions so as to give her evidence of her process as well as so she can return to the footage and take notes on the performances.

I don't know how I feel about having another person in the room during rehearsals, especially someone who the actors are unfamiliar with. I voiced this concern, but I was assured the actors were comfortable and they didn't seem to mind my presence. I did observe that they were very aware of the camera and would often cast their attention to me, whether or not this was a good or bad thing I am unsure about. On one level actors are supposed to perform for people (especially strangers) and Arpi even said that she wanted to get them used to the concept of a camera man and to acting in front of a camera.

I tried a couple of different things during this session, for it I issued a professional camera (the Sony PXW-X200) and tripod with boom mic mounted to the camera. I had trouble recording the performances well from the distance that I was situated with the boom mic (I thought it would work better since its served me so well during soccer matches).

I also employed the use of my DSLR, to compare the footage and sound quality. I gave both versions to Arpi after exporting the footage, I think it would be better to have two cameras and two camera ops. Actors faces often got blocked by other actors or objects with just the one angle, two angles would fix this problem.

I would upload the comparisons I've made to show you the difference, but I don't feel comfortable uploading someone else's image on the internet without permission.
