BSA 131 (Digital Filmmaking I) Week 4 : Pitching Ideas
We learned about pitching music video ideas this week and the process to use when doing so, we also got a chance to sit down with the music students and present them our ideas:
Pitching Process
1. A good way to start the pitching process is by complimenting the artist or somehow connecting yourself to the song.
This step makes the music video feel more unique to their specific personality/work.
2. Establish what kind of music video it will be (conceptual/performance based/narrative driven) to give the artist a clear idea. Use effective descriptive words to communicate the mood/style.
3. Use effective descriptive words to communicate the mood/style. Define what the artists will be doing or any other technical factors that will be in play - these include wardrobe choices.
4. The idea, told clearly in under a minute.
My Ideas:
Lili Natalea - Tell Me What You Think : A woman's significant other ignores her by placing headphones on his ears while she tries to talk to him. The video follows her as she attempts different forms of visual communication to capture his attention.
Rebecca Trip - Out of Time : A couple are stuck in a room together as the walls (the aspect ratio) slowly start closing in on them.

Kurtis Murray - Going Backwards (feat Killagramz) : A man recently fired from his job encounters a homeless band without any instruments on his way home, captivated by the performance he starts hearing the music they're "playing".
How it went:
At the end of the day only a couple of music students showed up out of the five or six that were supposed to, luckily one of those was Lili Natalea, the first choice for my song. I wasn't super happy with how I pitched it to her, but my idea got green-lit. The reason I wasn't that satisfied was because when I told her my interpretation of the lyrics she revealed to me that it was not what she originally intended. This threw me off a bit and made me question whether or not I should continue with my idea. Although she said one of the things she likes about songs is how people interpreted it differently, I wasn't sure if a different interpretation should be the way the song is represented. I am confident in my idea though, so I decided to persist - hopefully she likes the final product.

Yes, artistic interpretation always keeps filmmakers on their toes! Thanks, Bo.
