Interlaced and Progressive BSA 105 (Editing) Week 9
Progressive and Interlaced: We learned about two scanning methods used on TV's, the first is a form of compression called Interlaced. The interlaced scan is used on older, more traditional television systems. In this scan only half the picture is on screen at any one time, the second half appears a split second after the first. This is why when watching Interlaced there is a blur effect during fast movements. The progressive scan shows the whole picture at once.
PAL interlaced = 50 fields/sec, each field scanning alternate vertical lines (so half the v. resolution). This was a poor-man's method of increasing perceived "frame-rate" whilst maintaining same transmission bandwidth.
