The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari: BSA 106 (Screen Arts 1) Week 12

This week we watched the movie "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari"

The film was directed by Robert Wiene in 1920 and was part of the German Expressionism film movement. Some of the German Expressionist techniques I noticed was the surrealistic set design, the extreme make-up and the use of painting to represent light and shadow.

I personally really enjoyed the film and thought the story was really quite entertaining, with enough twists and turns that kept me engaged, twists and turns that one does not usually expect from such an old film. The use of German Expressionism's more surrealistic elements were also used really well in this film, as the distorted world is a good representation of how the main character views his world.

I would recommend this film, although most people today find it quite boring, because I feel that it is well made, has an interesting story and isn't even that long - the only parts that can drag are the text boxes that pop up.
